Hindu Seva Pratishthana established in 1980, identifies and trains volunteers for social action, social change and development in and around the State.

When HSP was established, there were several questions about gathering volunteers. Who would work as Sevavrathis (dedicated volunteers)? The concept of training volunteers for social action was new at that point of time. What kind of curriculum was needed? Who will train the volunteers and where will they be trained? Who is going to make use of the trained Sevavrathis?

When HSP plunged into volunteerism, they discovered that a large chunk of the people who approached them were youngsters. More than 90 per cent of volunteers trained by HSP were young women! This showed that there was tremendous goodwill in our society and most of them often thought about contributing to society.

HSP identified those areas where there was an urgent need for voluntary action. Protection of human rights and dignity of people with disabilities, people in the tribal areas, rights of street children, education for children from the deprived section of the society, promotion of Sanskrit to develop an integrated society, are just some of the areas where HSP have launched their projects. These projects were evaluated and were later made into large scale programmes. The projects went under a different banner — Aruna Chetana, Seva in Action, Sanskrit Bharathi, Prasanna counselling centre.

HSP believes that volunteering should be a symbiotic experience between the volunteer and the NGO. Mr Sridhar Sagar, Director HSP says, “it is important for HSP that each Sevavrathi believes in the cause that she is involved in, in order to be successful in her work. For any cause to succeed, we need committed and dedicated volunteers.”

The training of Sevavrathis is unique. The curriculum was designed taking into account the present local needs. Sevavrathis came from varying educational, social and economic backgrounds.

The curriculum was designed to give the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to serve with dedication and commitment.

The curriculum is evolved using participatory approach with constant upgradation to ensure it retains its relevance to the needs of society.

To join HSP as a Sevavrathi, a person must be between the age of 18-60 and must be healthy. He/she must be willing to give three years of voluntary service to HSP after training. Donations to HSP are exempted from income tax under section 80G. A portion would also go to Sevavrathis corpus fund, to ensure continuation of HSP activities and to support volunteers committing themselves for life.

In addition, HSP will soon start 100 early child-care centres, 200 free tuition classes, and 100 non-formal education centres. Later, he was taken to Chennai to work in a country liquor shop. The shopkeeper read a newspaper article about `Nele' and brought the child to its doors. Today, Nele is Manikanta's home. He is in school, in 4th standard.

Nele is the home for children abandoned to the care of streets to beg, pick rags and do other menial work. It takes them into its bosom, nurses them to good health and mind and initiates them into man-making education. Many such street children picked up by Nele are today role models. They bag prizes in competitions.

Saraswati, just eight, had acute hearing impairment. Her ability to learn was so low that even special schools would not admit her. She joined Aruna Chetna. Today she has blossomed into a creative girl, excelling in dance and art. Groomed as a teaching assistant, she is now in vocational training division in Aruna Chetna itself.

Started in the year 1987, Aruna Chetna takes care of children like Saraswati and others suffering disabilities like cerebral palsy, mental retardation, hearing impairment, partial visual impairment, behavioural and emotional disorders. There are over 160 such impaired children today in Aruna Chetna.

Aruna Chetna has dedicated and experienced teachers who provide comprehensive services to the affected children including physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, academic education, self-management, vocational training, sports, music, dance, dramatics, drawing and painting and yoga.

'Prasanna' is a counselling initiative for mental health. Expert counselling is costly in this area and the poor can hardly afford it. So, qualified doctorsfrom NIMHANS are networked as volunteers to counsel the needy. More than 1000 mental cases, 700 family issues, and 500 rehabilitation efforts were successfully handled by Prasanna.

The head of Prasanna, Dr Mrs Pankaja, was awarded `Vidyaratna' in 1998. Various public service outfits like Lions, Rotary, Inner Wheel and others have honoured Prasanna. Nele, Aruna Chetna and Prasanna are just illustrations, different manifestations, of the same mission, the Hindu Seva Pratishtana in Bangalore.

The work of Pratishtana is not limited to these initiatives, but extends to a vast area. Protection of environment is a key concern of Pratishtana. It launched a movement to `Save the Western Ghats' led by Anant Hegde who works with the Pratishtana.

It has instituted a task force to document the bio-resources of various villages in Sagar, Thirthahally and Hosanagara taluks in Karnataka – a far-reaching work.

It has special concern for women and conducts massive programmes mobilizing them on the cultural plane. It conducts Deepa Pujas in which thousands participate every year. It organised a Matru Sangama in which 45,000 women from executives and professionals to ordinary slum dwellers resided together.

It also works vigorously to eradicate untouchability and alcoholism. Conceived and executed by Ajit Kumar, a dynamic RSS worker, 25 years ago, the Hindu Seva Pratishtana has over the years grown into a huge, high quality public service mission.

He died young, but thanks to his far-sight, the Pratishtana work has grown exponentially.

As he conceived this mission, Ajit Kumar did not think of building a huge corpus of funds. Instead, he built a team of dedicated volunteers and instituted a system of identifying, training and sustaining more of them. The idea of public service is generally understood as raising, accumulating and spending funds. Sometimes it is even trivialised as a task, which can be accomplished by just money.

More often than not, skill in fund raising is considered more important to engage in public service. But Ajit Kumar was different. He believed that motivated men, motivated by the urge to serve the motherland through the service of the needy, are more critical than money.

He proved right. Thanks to his vision, today in the Pratishtana there are over 3000 whole-time volunteers - yes 3000! They are called `Sevavratis', that is, those who have taken a vow for service. They are competent in different fields, well-trained and motivated by high levels of compassion linking the service they deliver to the idea of man-making and nation-building.

A Sevavrati takes oath to give full time to the Pratishtana for three years. But, there are 'Sevavratis' who are working for over 15 years. In addition there are thousands of equally dedicated workers who work only part time.

This huge stock of trained, sincere and committed workers constitutes the real asset of the Pratishtana, not the moderate financial numbers disclosed in its balance sheet.

But the story of Pratishtana is still not complete. It is a mission whose service enriches the soul of the needy who receive its help, and not trade off its service for change of faith, God, or culture of the recipient.

Those missions that offer relief to the needy in exchange for the recipient being persuaded to disown his or her faith or God or culture are also celebrated as great social service missions.

But, the Pratishtana is different, because its services have no aim or intent other than building a mighty and prosperous India. This is real national service, man-making and nation-building service, which Swami Vivekananda repeatedly commended to the youth of India.

The Hindu Seva Pratishtana that serves the acutely needy is actually transforming into a movement in Karnataka. This illustrious mission is entering its Silver Jubilee Year on February 25, 2006.

Writer's email: comment@gurumurthy.net

MATRICHAYA IN DELHI

INAUGURATION OF ANOTHER MATRICHAYA IN DELHI: On 20th May, 2002 a new child adoption center was inaugurated in Miyanwali Nagar locality of Delhi by Hon Union Minister of Home Shri Lal Krishna Advani. As members of the society we live in, we owe the same love and affection to those who are not fortunate enough to be born in a family. With this noble thought in mind Vatsalya Trust was registered in 1983 with the objective to accept destitutes of all ages and both the sexes, to nurture them, to educate them and rehabilitate them. A beginning was made by starting an orphanage for infants. Started with 2 girl infants in June 1985, this center, today takes care of around 50 infants on an average. Every year almost an equal number of infants are rehabilitated in caring adoptive families. The center is fully equipped with trained and dedicated staff and has renowned paediatricians on its payroll. So far placing them with caring adoptive families has rehabilitated 607 orphans. Shortage of space prevents the Trust from expanding its activities. To create awareness in the community about the problems of the innocent orphans and ensure healthy, receptive attitude about adoption, periodical group meetings and seminars are organized. Pre and post adoption seminars are arranged with active participation of the experts in the field as well as of experienced families.

A Balikashram for girls from the age group of 4-14 years who are either destitute or come from adverse family situations, provides long term development support under this project. Efforts are made to bring them at least to the average level of education. Vocational training such as sewing is also provided.

A shelter for women in distress has been set up. Many times women in certain critical periods need temporary shelter and sympathetic guidance. This facility is provided at Sanapada on a small scale.

An old age home, ‘Vanprastham’, too has been started. As traditional family structure is undergoing a rapid change in modern urban India, a large number of aged people need to be looked after in a newer set up. Here they are taken care of with dignity and are given a chance to participate meaningfully in various activities.

Vatsalaya Trust has some future projects. A plot nearby the present location has been allotted to the Trust at Kanjur Marg, Mumbai Building that would cater to the needs of many more orphans, destitute and underprivileged cost Rs. 1.5 crore. This complex will have following facilities:

Fully equipped orphanage for 60 children, Balakashram for 35 destitute boys, shelter and development facilities for children with deformity and a day care center or crèche already in operation.

Major source of funding has been a commendable support from the public at large। Government assistance is also available through its schemes, though on a very limited scale. Hence there is a constant need for funds to support ongoing and future projects of Vatsalya trust.

Vatsalya Trust, Mumbai was born on 8th February 1983। The founders were Smt. Sanjivani Raykar, Late Dr. Shivram Athavale, Shri. G.A Damle and few others who felt a need for starting a charitable organization dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of destitute children. ‘Vatsalya' a Sanskrit word meaning affection was considered appropriate for naming the proposed Charitable Trust.

After overcoming some initial teething troubles an orphanage was started at Kanjur with 2 infant girls on 2nd June 1985. It was not a cakewalk. Nurturing, and rehabilitating infants involved several aspects: legal, medical, social and emotional. The number of infants started growing steadily but Vatsalya Trust had to deal with space and infrastructure constraints. Financial resources were also limited. Vatsalya undoubtedly kept working on all these fronts. Now, after 20 years of existence, Vatsalya’s social activities have taken deep roots in the society and the Trust stands on sound footing today.

Abalashrama

Abode for the abandoned

Abalashrama is an institution that nurtures and rehabilitates women who have taken a beating in life.

THE HANDSOME young man, educated and doing very well in Mumbai has come to Basavanagudi to make his pilgrimage. He has a tight schedule, but there's always time for his beloved Abalashrama. He spends some time at the institution, reminiscing, looking at the prayer hall and roaming around the spacious lounge. He silently salutes what was once his home.
Such thanksgiving visits are not uncommon. His mother was young and pregnant when she lost her husband. Abandoned by relatives, the hapless girl had no one to turn to. She managed for a while, and when her baby was a year old, turned up at the Abalashrama seeking refuge. The institution took her in, something it has been doing for nearly a century now.
Abalashrama, located at one of the busiest places in Bangalore, D.V.G. Road, was started by the late Chakravarthy Venkata Varada Iyengar. Available records speak of him as being better known for his high principles and noble ideals than as a Congress worker and Arya Samajist.

He believed in setting examples than rhetoric and, in a move considered radical at the time, married a child widow, Krishnamma, for which he faced social opprobrium. That his bride was of a similar mindset is evinced in the fact that she also worked with him in the care of orphans and destitutes. At first, the couple set up an ashram on their residential premises. The couple's generosity drew countless destitute girls and finally, the couple was forced to look around for more space. In 1907, the municipal authorities made available the land where the Abalashrama stands now and the Iyengars, with donations from like-minded people, constructed the building in 1911.
It is unfortunate that due to lack of documentation and non-availability of records, not much is known about the Iyengar couple or their family in later years. But what has endured is their legacy and a committed group is carrying on their noble work. Today, the Abalashrama, a registered institution, is run by an elected body and follows the ideals set by its founder, i.e., rehabilitation of young girls and women in the age group of 15 to 25 years, who are orphans and destitutes.
In a society where gender inequality has been refined into an art form, one finds an increasing number of orphans and women disowned by kith and kin. Thankfully, there are still some altruistic people who view the problem from a humanitarian angle. They feel that these victims of fate should be given proper refuge and made to join the mainstream. Unless such proactive measures are taken, the development of any society would be lopsided.
With this focus, the Abalashrama has an elaborate rehabilitation programme it implements through interaction with various organisations. Though individuals can approach it for help on their own, most here are sent by various institutions engaged in similar tasks. An institution like Balakiyara Bala Mandira, a government organisation that provides shelter and education to abandoned girls, prefers to send them to places like Abalashrama as rules bar it from keeping girls over 16.

Today the ashrama, which has a maximum intake of 50, is a home away from home to 36 young girls. "Those who have a long future and those who can be rehabilitated" are given admission, says B.V. Sesha, Secretary. Orphan girls who work in various plantations and estates in Karnataka and who are sent away by their employers once they reach puberty are also taken in. The girls at the Abalashrama are either students or apprentices in companies and factories. They are encouraged to be economically independent. Today there are graduates in biotechnology, law, and commerce. School dropouts and those not keen on formal education are given vocational training like tailoring, screen printing, book binding, typeset composing, nursing, and computer operations, depending on their aptitude. The ashrama has a marketing outlet that sells products made by the inmates. Mr. Sesha says the institution works at making the girls' stay happy and fruitful, trying to instill confidence in them and making them see themselves as dignified members of society. "We provide them with clothes four times a year, and nutritious breakfast, lunch, and dinner comparable with that provided by any middle-class family. But once the girls start earning as apprentices, they are expected to pay for their transport. We also teach them to be frugal and to save for the future."
The ashrama places great value on sports, yoga, and personality development and the girls are motivated to concentrate on healthy living and high goals. In cases where a girl has suffered trauma, counselling and medicare are arranged. The ashrama has on its panel leading gynaecologists, psychiatrists, lawyers, social workers and so on. Once a girl gets a permanent job, she is helped either to get married or move out into a women's hostel. The choice is hers. Should she opt for marriage, the ashrama goes about the procedures as any parent would do. However, it is the groom that comes here in search of a bride, says Mr. Sesha, beaming. Thanks to modern, progressive outlook, many young men are eager to set an example by marrying an orphan. When an eligible youth turns up, the authorities first verify his antecedents and only after they are convinced do they give the green signal. The wedding takes place at the "bride's residence". Invitations are printed and distributed by the ashrama while the groom is expected to bring the mangalya and a good saree. He is permitted to invite 25 guests for lunch, which the ashrama provides. One of the office-bearers, along with his wife, performs the kanyadan as per Arya Samaj rites. The ashram sends off its "daughter" after presenting her with a mixie, pressure cooker, stove, utensils, bedding and essential groceries. The Orphan Relief Fund set up by voluntary donations comes in handy for such occasion. No wonder many of the girls return to their foster home for delivery and post-natal care!
The authorities wish to replace the age-old building with a modern structure, better furnished, with infrastructure for job-oriented training, including computer education. T.V. Ananthan and Shri. P.E.B. Menon.
Mathruchaya which made its first step under the guidance of sreemad Garudadwajananda swami has made great strides when looking back now।

Around 50 children who are students of 1st grade to college and ITI level are well looked after here. The curriculum here is based on the ancient Gurukulam system, where, along with regular classes, farming, agriculture, screen-printing, soap manufacture, yoga, physical training, bhajans are the daily activities. Children from tribal and backward areas are inmates of Mathruchaya.
Swami Vivekananda was of the view that “the hands which serve food are more benevolent than those hands which are pressed together for prayer”। A number of blind boys are also staying at Mathruchaya and are able to continue their studies at Chovvara high school।

H.H Sri Jayendrasaraswathi Swami of Kanchi Kamakodi, Shri Poornamritanandapuri of Amrithanandamayi Mutt, RSS Sanghchalak Shri K.S. Sudarshan, senior BJP leader Shri O.Rajagopal etc are some of the regular visitors of Mathruchaya to give their valuable guidance.
'Annadanam' on the occasions like Marriage, Birthdays, Grihapravesh, Shraadham etc can be done at this institution। Anyone can be a participant of this godly venture by donating a small sum of money.

Donations can be sent to The director,
Mathruchaya bala bhavan,
Chovvara P।O।, Aluva - 683 571। Phone no। 0484-2600203

Vanavasi Vikasa Kendram:A boon to PTG Kids

Vanavasi Vikasa Kendram:A boon to PTG Kids Education –

A primary prerequisite for development. It is only a matter of chance that we give to a kid and he will come out with flying colors.
Annapoornamma vidyarthi vasathi gruham is an effort, where the ordinary boys deprived of childhood are tendered to bringout skills in them. Some of the children are destitutes, some economically weak and others socially weak. The main focus ofcourse will be on the kids who have come from disintigrated families and are victims to the local social problems.
Right from the day one it’s been a wonderful experience and nourishing moments of joy. From a humble start of 4 boys (4th sept ’94) today this innovative effort has been able to tender the tallents of 18 kids all of them boys. The boys are selected from the Kurnool, Anantapur and Cudappah districts. Present no represents 10 villages from the above said places. Children now are from varying 1st class to intermediate and performing a wonder, revealing their inner talents. Located in the Chidambararao Street in Kurnool the affection home is a continuing effort and fruitful in all spheres touching the inner hearts of the people in and around.
A small kid came to annapurnamma vasthi gruham he was picked up begging on the streets by one of the volunteers of sevabharathi, now the boy is an active kid with performance in education and sports. A dream come true for the people working for the mission to see the young mind blossom to colors naturally.
Folk arts is one area the children stand different. Now to provide the children more facilities and good environment of learning and living, a new building is planned. The work has already started and is in anticipation of the help from the society in whatsoever possible way. Children from 25 villages and 40 of them carefully selected are being given a qualitative education.
The awasam has been working with the same resolve since August 1992. Theres no permanant accomadation for the children yet, but for the temporary Shed of the Sriram sagar project which was given temporarily for the purpose. The children study in the local Saraswathy sishu mandir school a school with reputation unchallenged.
Mahesh is a kid in the village of Potharam. He used to litter and involve in small thefts with his group of friends. After four years he's now completed his 10th, won the statelevel prize in Yoga. He wants to be software professional. The young mind is now tuned to his friends, his wish to get them back to school. As the figures above suggest there are many more like mahesh who when given a right chance shall not only better themselves but will better their communities.
Vivek was six when brought to the awasam (Hostel) he was roaming here and there. One of the volunteers of SEVABHARATHI brought him to the home. Now he's completed his 10th and wants to complete post graduatuion as well and work for the betterment of his people in the village for life. Vivek now has also completed his Intermediate board exams. This year (2004) a child has score 490 out of 600 in his SSC exams while two of the boys have achieved a 8000 rank in his Medicine and another 18,000 rank in his Engineering (EAMCET). The children are the first generation literates not only in their family but in their village. They have made a mark in their academics.
The children are unstoppable when it comes to the Sports and games. They have even participated in national level competitions.
The Children have a good social understanding of their status and condition in the society. The poverty has taught them to better themselves but after tasting the affection and fragnance of living together now the children want to better their community. Already 13 children have passed out of their 10th exams with good scores. All the children have been working as voluteers for the betterment of their people in their spare time while continuing their studies.
The impact is not restricted to the Hostels only but extends back to their home inspiration the kids themselves. In the three villages the kids themselves have been successful in deaddicting their parrents, influencing the fellows and friends in to small things like taking bath daily, attending school, small songs and shlokas. (Child Labour Rehabilitation Project)

For the thousands of little hands that work and thousands more rescued by volunteers there is no gaurantee that they would be safe and away from child labour. It is our resolve to ensure their safety. The cause "Child labour eradication" and the place Mahaboobnagar (Palamoor) district the beneficiaries 80 genuinely poor, deserving children in the clutches of child labour. An effort to bringout inherent talents from the genuinely poor & tanlented.
Seva Bharathi, Palamoor
Sandipani Awasam a result of the perpetual efforts by Seva Bharathi since 2002 in the campaign against Child labour. The effort involved building a network across 60 NGOs that organised bridge course centers for child labourers. The little hands that have toiled have now been performing on par in education and sports with other children. Thanks to APUS a teachers association & Seva Bharathi volunteers today there is a mechanism to pick the talented needy.
Its a known fact and official figures show that 37% of children rescued & put in rehabilitation homes end up at square one. The endeavor is to educate and give a chance to the under-dogs to prove their mettle. A total of 80 children all selected from the Child labour rehabilitation centers, from around Mahaboobnagar district are the beneficiaries. The children are genuinely poor and needy as also are truly deserving. Mahaboobnagar incidentally happens to be the one with highest child labour figures.
As a continuing effort of the Child labour rehabilitation programmes, Seva Bharathi has decided to set up a permanent hostel for the genuinely, talented and economically weak students of Mahaboobnagar dist. Based on the results of the talent search exam, fit students are selected and are awarded with scholarships to pursue their studies. The talent search exam includes a combination of psychomatic, mathematic and general aptitude developed in association with the Hyderabad Psychologists Association. Not just education but the children would also recieve technical & skill training at Sandipani Awasam.
The campaign for eradication of child labour paired with alternative education and innovative methods has made the children who earlier were child labourers and now stay with Seva Bharathi to get back to school. The kids impressed upon the authorities to the extent that they had to invite them to the Republic day parade in state capital.
Now after one year training in their rehabilitation homes, Seva Bharathi has picked them up on their merit and for the past one year they are pursuing their studies at Sandipani Awasam. And luckily it's a group on good-natured, partiotic NRI's that strengthened Seva Bharathi's hands by suporting financially for their studies, The Palamoor NRI Forum.
Seva Bharathi runs 5 Bridge course centers, which have gained a benchmark standard in child labour rehabilitation. The efffort has benefited some 6,000 children and contributed to a sustained campaign and awareness in the district.
Sandipani Awasam would house 100 poor but talented students who otherwise would end up as bonded / child labourers for the rest of their lives in future. Apart from the activities for the benefit of Children the home would also act a a nerve center for future Community development programmes. Inspired by this effort another Home for such deprived children is being set up at Ramayampet, Medak District.
Children have been selected from Seva Bharathi’s Rehabilitation homes for the bravery awards by the District administration headed by the District Collector. The children have performed extraordinary tasks of bravery. This year the Govt has been considerate with the cause of Child labour highlighting the cause and highlighting the children who have taken a turning point in their life after being rehabilitated.Madhava Awasam feels proud of its children as two of them are from Madhava Awasam.
Chennakeshawulu: S/O RamuluAge: 14 yearsClass: 5thVillage: Makhtalused to work: Theft in rail, jeep, bus Has a knack in theft and was considered notorious for his small thefts. His parrents had to move away to Gujarat and even there he was the same and they have to come back home to Makhtal, where his life took a turn after his interaction with Seva Bharathi volunteers. The Child now stands first of 300 of his colleagues.
Now the kid has won his bravery award for his greatest transformation of his life, and seva Bharathi is proud of him.
Padigae Parameshwar : S/O Sundaraiah age :14 years Class: 6thvillage : Ramapuram used to work: Cleaner in Tata Sumo, jeep, Hotel. For whatever reasons they may have been that led them into child labour Seva Bharathi decided to give them a chance.
The failure of monsoons resulting in low yield unreliable agriculture is one reason for the unemployed poverty in villages. The first victims obviously are the little hands who have to forego their schools and join their parents in feeding themselves and lending a hand to their family. Seva Bharathi has taken upon itself to at least make role models out of these children for others to follow.
The Organisation set out after a thorough talent search exam with the help of not just the usual mathematics, general aptitude and other routine things, but also with a heart to select the talented children suffering in the clutches of the child labour. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers from the teaching fraternity represented by the APUS and the Psychologists association of Hyderabad as well as Seva Bharathi, a thorough verification of the financial status has been conducted.
One more thing that influenced the Volunteers of Seva Bharathi has been the fact that not less than 37% of the Residential bridge school beneficiaries after mainstreaming, whatever the efforts of the volunteers involved are end up back in child labour. To avoid this and bring childhood back to the children Seva Bharathi took up the task of providing rehabilitation and scholarship programme for the children at least until 10th class board exams and depending on their interest and talent later.
All 4 children have been selected from Seva Bharathi’s Rehabilitation homes for the bravery awards by the District administration headed by the District Collector. The children have performed extraordinary tasks of bravery. This year the Govt has been considerate with the cause of Child labour highlighting the cause and highlighting the children who have taken a turning point in their life after being rehabilitated.Madhava Awasam feels proud of its children as two of them are from Madhava Awasam
Tikkala Ramesh:S/o BachannnaAge: 12 yearsClass: 6thVillage: Kottapalli, Used to work: Cattle rearingHe scored first in Seva Bharathi's Talent exam out of 2345 participants; he now stands first in the schools of Rangareddy & Mahaboobnagar districts. The inmates of the awasam are trained in various createive arts and vocational skills so that would be able to earn their sustenance of their own.

Sri Vivekananda Awasam an Affection home for the destitute children orphaned by accident for no fault of theirs. The little hearts need the warmth and affection of a family, with which they can feel at home. Bhainsa is the business hub for cotton trade on the AP Maharashtra border, located in tribal belt of Adilabad district. The Affection home now houses 18 orphaned children. The children are wonderful and have been working hard to reach the firsts in the class.

While a dedicated couple and full time volunteers of Sevabharathi, the children call them mataji and Acharya or the warden look after the day to day activities of the home, the Sevabharathi committee looks after the maintainance of the home. This summer ie the year 2004 the children have stayed with the child labourers at the Sevabharathi bridge school to see for themselves one of the projects of sevabharathi. It was astonishing to hear from the children that they too will one day raise up to help the children and run such schools.

May God give them the strength to realise their ambitions! And thanks to the innovative idea of the volunteers today the children are more confident and more understanding. To inculcate the dignity of labour and selfreliance last year the children stayed with the local carpenter mechanic and such 5 different tradesman to learn a vocational trade for themselves. It has been learning for them. Apart from vocational skills the children have a flair of drawing and painting. Their collection ranges from a beautiful house amidst the woods to the national leaders like gandhiji, netaji and Shivaji.

This home for the little heroes has been in their service since 1996 to be precise 28th Sept 1996. On the eve of the seventh Annual day celebrations the children were lucky to be in the company of the Swamyji Sri Sri vidyanandagiri of the peetha, and also Sri Sanjay paswan the Union minister of state for HRD. Till date 5 children sponsored by the local business commuity are studying Intermediate in Warangal, Bodhan and Nizamabad.

In the Board exams of 2004 two children have scored 491 a score that is highest in the town and around. It is the strong resolve of the volunteers of Sevabharathi that the children shall be trained in everyway various creative arts and vocational skills so that they would be able to stand as individuals and contribute whatever little possible back to the society. Apart from the Affection home the local committee of sevabharathi is running a Free Medical aid center with the name DHANVANTARI for the past 10 years.

There have been several places and habbitations still in India with out a Doctor even if there is one around people cant afford him. In such rural and inaccessible areas sevabharathi under the name Dhanvantari Medical Aid Center (DMAC) has been conducting permnant reggular medical aid centers. Like for example in bhainsa, Nighwa. The local private practitioners have become Volunteers to serve the masses, and today the rual people with medical aid from DMAC have a reason to smile. Nighwa is 20 KM from Bhainsa and Doctors from Bhainsa visit this place every Sunday to attend to the poor and needy.

On an average there are 40 patients who benefit from the center. Dr Damodar has presided the inaugural function. He Said Youth are getting addicted to Drinking and other drugs like gutka. The total 37 gudems / pentas as they are called depend on this tribal aid & research center in Gokavaram run by Sevabharathi in the experienced guidance of a retired Regional Joint director (RJD) in technical education, Mr Sharma is interested in these people.

The Effort after the initial curiosity has lead to a survey which revealed facts of neglect and unattended, sick and illiterate innocent children as well as the Elders. With this it was decided to initially start a residential school for chenchu boys in a temporary structure in SRISAILAM. And the Boys (infact the tribe is so) are are shy to face the outside world. But as is known the tribe is very rich in cultural Arts, traditional medicine, and most importantly the hospitality. On the day of the inauguration Nov 18th 1999 the local ITDA PO was invited and I Quote "These are the most vagabond boys that you are dealing with i am afraid if they can stay here even for a couple of eeks and Best of Luck" that was his experience. Today we have 43 chenchu Boys not just staying behind with us but learning Carpentary, Masonry and for the last year Ganesh festival the boys made their own clay idol of Ganesha for ganesh chaturdi. An illuminating example is SANGHMITRA as it is famous for the citizens of the Nandyal town. Sanghamitra Seva samithi, Registered Voluntary Organisation runs SANGHAMITRA AWASAM an Affection Home for the Abandoned, Destitute and Orphaned boys.

The Location Nandyala Town, the place the busy center at bus station the Scene a small kid has been weeping there with nobody to care almost abandoned. A Good Samaritan was kind enough to walk up to him and ask "Son why are you crying" the child did not speakup Infact he couldn't. The boy has disability to speak and hear also. After sometime the Good Samaritan a farmer from the nearby village called up SANGHAMITRA and reported about the child. The Police was called in and volunteers from SANGHAMITRA tried to locate his parents through the local cable operator and the newspapers. But nobody came the child is Rambabu after three years he is now a happy child, standing first in games sports and academics at the School for the special children in Baptla. Thanks to the efforts of SANGHAMITRA an Affection Home run by sevabharathi.

This Affection home for the Destitutes made a humble beginning on the Vivekananda jayanti of 1994. The resolve was to provide Warmth, care & Affection to the little children who are deprived of the same, to give them a right to childhood and a chance to be better citizens. It was just a rented house with 2 children in 1994, today as on March 2004 the home provides

support to the 24 children with a touch of family environment. The boys identified as orphans and nobody to take care of and in the age group 3-7 years are selected by the volunteers of Sevabharathi irrespective of caste / creed. The children are supported and nurtured till they are selfreliant. Till date 4 children have passed out of the 10th board exams. Out of them Markandeya is pursuing his Post graduation along with certificate for typing in lower, DTP. Mahesh is in his B.com final, Raghu Intermediate final year, Upender ITI final year.

Some children who came out in flying colors are Pranitsimha who scored a district first in the Essay writing competition, Ravi and Naresh who scored a Zonal medal in Karate championship. And one special mention is all the children appear for the samskruta prachara sabha Exams every year.

Apart from this sweet lttle place for the children, SANGHAMITRA also has taken up activities to the slums around the Muncipal office. A Non-formal altrernative education school for 90 children is run by the Home for the past 3 years and it's a mark that Sanghamitra has made that all the children were mainstreamed. With the help of the rotary club of Nandyal Sanghamitra took up the cause of the Women in the slums. Today 97 women have been trained in stiching, fabric designing, thread work and fabric painting. A total of 30 women have been distributed the Sewing machines with the help of the Rotary.

Sri Vivekananda Awasam:- Bhainsa

Sri Vivekananda Awasam:- Bhainsa 18 boys

Located in tribal belt of Bhainsa in Adilabad district , the awasam houses 18 orphaned children .

Vatsalya Sindhu (Home for Destitute Boys)

Vatsalya Sindhu (Home for Destitute Boys)

Swamy Vivekananda said Service to the poor, the ignorant and the weak and the diseased is the real worship. He also said they alone live who live for others, the rest are more dead than alive.

A couple of calves, and cows, lustre green and peaceful environment add to the liveliness of the children at Vatsalya Sindhu. As the name suggests it is an affection home for destitute boys run by Seva Bharathi and located in Moulali, Hyderabad . The home was started with a humble beginning on 25 th Dec'1989 . It has been a journey with affection, care and sharing of love. The volunteers, the philanthropists, the Children and the needy all make the family of Vatsalya Sindhu.

There are many unfortunate children orphaned or deprived of love in the society and hailing from the downtrodden families. Vatsalya Sindhu selects such children below 8 years of age. Children inherently have a sea of talent it is only the opportunity that we need to provide. With this resolve Vatsalya Sindhu takes care of these children till they are self-reliant.

The children are provided love, care and affection apart from education, food and clothing. Discipline and affection go together in this home. The children study in the Saraswathy Sishu Mandir School and proved their talent in studies as well as extra curricular activities. The children have a fair knowledge of music and Sanskrit; it is nice to listen to the children speaking in Sanskrit as fluently as in Telugu the mother tongue.

Deepak stands as an example to the rest of his fellow students in Vatsalya Sindhu, he has now completed 10+2.
